What types of activities can I expect?

HMA may coordinate activities that range in intensity or risk and every member is welcome to choose what to participate in. If at any time you are not comfortable with the activity, you can always walk away and disrobe. We do not want ReSisters to feel forced or coerced into any activity. To assist with defining your comfort level, we use a color-code system.

The most traditional events are “green” where we are marching two by two, we are generally intentionally silent or limit our vocalizations to chanting “SHAME”. These are events are
considered very low or no risk.

We also have “yellow” events. These events can be a mix of silence and chanting, where we can be a bit noisy (e.g. megaphone) or we are in a sensitive location that presents some risk.

Red events (some call them “unhinged pigeon” events) are riskier. We are usually loud, at a sensitive location and perhaps using bullhorns.
We will post each activity with a color-coded system so members can choose for themselves. If at any time an activity makes you uncomfortable, simply walk away or disrobe.

Can I still participate if I do not want to dress as a Handmaid?
Yes!  We encourage a few different options for those who prefer not to dress as Handmaids.

Option 1: Attend as a “Guardian”! Wear all black and optional black face covering. See Roles
for more information on responsibilities.

Option 2: Attend as an “Eye”! Wear clothing to blend in with civilians but perform an important role of watching for any disrupters or disruptive activity.

Option 3: “Marthas”! We always need help carrying our gear etc. You can dress however you like and assist with props, moving gear from place to place or general needs (i.e., water).

We ask that all participants respect our group and leadership.  We request when marching in formation Handmaids are placed in front, typically two by two lead by an Aunt, with Guardians following behind the Handmaids along with Marthas/general attendees. Eyes should be scattered and have a vantage point to better assess any disruptions or risks presented to the marchers.
